How to make a career transition to Data Analyst?

Hello there, and welcome back!

In this blog, I’d want to address the most often asked question I’ve received.

How I went from being a banker to a data analyst to a trainer and consultant;

Everyone has their own path to take, and these are the steps I took.

  1. LEARN SKILLS:  To begin your career, you will need the following basic skills:
    • Making learning SQL a requirement.
    • At least one visualization tool, like Tableau or Power BI.
    • Learning Excel (particularly pivot charts/Power Pivot). It is also beneficial for learning Power BI.
    • After becoming familiar with SQL, Excel, and at least Power BI or Tableau, learning at least one programming language such as Python or R would be beneficial.
  2. PROJECTS PORTFOLIO: Make sure you’re working on projects as you’re studying so you can build a project portfolio to show potential employers.
  3. RESUME WRITING: Regardless of your prior employment, make sure your resume clearly showcases your talents and expertise. Remember to mention your soft skills, which are useful as transferable skills, especially when changing careers.
  4. LEARN, UNLEARN, RELEARN: Continue to learn, hone your skills through certifications, and make use of free learning tools such as our YouTube Channel. Remember that practice makes perfect, and a lack of it might lead to a loss of practical abilities.
  5. LINKEDIN PROFILE: Remember to update your LinkedIn profile. Make significant connections and don’t be scared to request mentorship from a great role model. The majority of my job interviews and opportunities came from networking with recruiters on LinkedIn.
  6. RESOURCES: Use free resources to your advantage

On your journey, I wish you continued success. There will be days when you doubt your abilities, competency, and skills, leading you to give up; NEVER let this defeat you! If you’re having problems landing your first job, don’t lose up; hard work is usually rewarded!
